The Commission adopted on 1 February 2018 a proposal for a revised Drinking Water Directive to improve the quality of drinking water and provide greater access and information to citizens.

The proposal for modernizing the 20 year old Drinking Water Directive (98/83/EC) came as a result of the evaluation published in December 2016, as the Commission's response to the European Citizens' Initiative 'Right2Water' and as a contribution to meeting the targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The new Directive was adopted by the European Parliament and Council on 16.12.2020 and entered into force on 12 January 2021. Member States have to transpose its provisions into their national law by 12 January 2023.
