Evaluation of EU Strategy on Animal Welfare (2012-2015) finalised, SWD (2021) 76, 31 March 2021
Fitness check of animal welfare legislation: finalised, SWD (2022) 328 of 4 October 2022
Commission proposal – ongoing, to be adopted by the Commission in 2023
In its Special report on animal welfare, the European Court of Auditors recommended to the Commission to evaluate the EU Strategy for Protection and Welfare of Animals (2012-2015). The Commission published the results of the evaluation in March 2021.
With the adoption of the Farm to Fork Strategy in May 2020, the Commission announced an initiative to revise the EU acquis on the welfare of farmed animals (five EU Directives and two EU Regulations, covering animal welfare on farms, during transport and at the time of killing) and consider options for animal welfare labelling by 2023.
The findings of the Fitness Check finalised in 2022, together with the results of the evaluation of the Strategy, will inform the ongoing impact assessment supporting the revision of the existing legislation on animal welfare. The impact assessment will also consider options for possible EU rules on animal welfare labelling.
