Project impact
Artificial intelligence (AI) researchers are being trained in Slovenia to tackle a variety of topics, from climate change to precision medicine. As part of the SMASH project, five leading Slovenian institutions will hire 50 researchers, helping the country attract global expertise and bring back Slovenian researchers from abroad. The project will let researchers use the Slovenia-based Vega supercomputer, the first facility in the EU’s multi-billion-euro high-performance computing initiative. They will work on predicting the impacts of climate change, developing personalised medicines, answering fundamental questions about the nature of the universe and even looking at language and how we communicate. Beyond these goals, the project hopes to form a research community in the country for AI scientists. It will include training in both machine learning and wider research skills. The project also engages in collaborations beyond Slovenia with specialised organisations like the CERN Learning Hub to offer participating researchers the best possible career development opportunities.
