Project impact
Many of Europe’s professional workers need to use complex data in their work, even when they don’t really have any expertise in this area. By bringing together experts from academia, industry and the public sector, the NeEDS project built up European capacity to explain data including through the use of AI. AI often works like a black box – producing results without explaining how. The project sought to open up this ‘black box’ by ensuring that the models were transparent and able to explain the reasoning behind their decisions – an approach known as explainable AI. In order to do this, the project developed advanced mathematical models that made data easier to interpret, building trust in the results generated by AI while also keeping it in line with European values of data protection, privacy and transparency. By the end of the project, the researchers were working to enlarge the set of data science tools for both researchers and non-specialist data users, while also providing their expertise to industry.
