Project impact
How can we turn cutting-edge space research into accessible educational experiences? To understand where we come from and inspire the next generation of scientists, the CHAMELEON project simulated the conditions of deep space that produce planets like ours. The training network brought together eight research institutes to train doctoral researchers in interdisciplinary techniques spanning astrophysics, chemistry, geosciences, and artificial intelligence (AI) with the goal of creating virtual laboratories. These simulations help to make sense of the oftentimes incomplete or inconsistent data coming from deep space observations, such as data gathered from the James Webb Space Telescope. The results are 3D models for exoplanet atmospheres and planet formation that will support future European Space Agency missions and projects. The output from virtual laboratories also served as the basis for unique forms of outreach. The art exhibition ‘Exploring Exoplanets’ was held in parallel with the project's final conference, showcasing the power of art and science to inspire discovery and creativity.
