Turning the volume down on noise pollution
Bio-based Solutions for Improved Acoustic Applications (Bio-Acouis)
Urbanisation and technological advancements continue to intensify noise pollution, which has been shown to have direct negative effects on human health and behaviour. The Bio-Acouis project addresses the need for innovative, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly acoustic solutions.
Project impact
Constant noise can be bad for your health. Whether outdoors or in an office tower, the negative effects of persistent noise put Europe’s workers at risk of increased stress, which reduces productivity and creates long-term health problems. Through staff exchanges with business and research organisations across Europe, the Bio‑Acouis project is producing innovative approaches to help silence the noise with new acoustic panels and materials. Many current options for acoustic materials are not biodegradable and can contain harmful chemicals. Instead, this project focuses on bio-based materials such as wood fibres and agricultural waste. As new prototype acoustic panels made of sustainable raw materials are already being tested, the project is well on its way to deliver quieter work and public spaces, greener acoustic materials and a reduction in pollution and landfill waste. This work advances Europe’s plans to build a circular economy and reduce pollution to levels that are no longer harmful to health.
