Training the next generation of wind energy engineers

Efficient Harvesting of the Wind Energy (AEOLUS4FUTURE)

Wind has been powering people’s dreams and ambitions since the first ships took sail. Now the EU-funded AEOLUS4FUTURE training network has done the same for 15 young researchers, preparing them to meet the challenge of optimising future wind energy systems for a sustainable economy.

Project impact

Expanding Europe’s capacity in wind energy requires new expertise and innovations. To deliver this, the AEOLUS4FUTURE project established a first-of-its-kind Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Graduate School for Wind Energy. This graduate school brought together 15 institutions to train early-career researchers in technologies aimed at expanding wind capacity in Europe, while also lowering costs. Their work included developing novel materials, such as high-strength steels for turbines operating at high altitude and in strong winds, as well as innovative designs like components that require no regular maintenance. These technologies will enable the expansion of wind turbines to more locations and require fewer repairs, increasing the supply of emission-free energy, while also training a new generation of clean energy specialists. By unlocking new wind markets and improving turbine technology, the project helped increase the efficiency and supply of renewable wind energy in EU Member States, resulting in cheaper, cleaner power for European households and businesses, and contributing to Europe’s target of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050.
