The present report summarises the achievements of the RFCS project DRYLIG: Competitive pre-drying technologies and firing concepts for flexible and efficient lignite utilisation (RFCR-CT-2014-00009). The main objective of the DRYLIG project was to investigate the adoption of pre-dried lignite (PDL) utilization towards increased flexibility, improved efficiency and environmental and economic performance of combustion processes. Within the project, two extensive literature studies on PDL production and firing technologies as well as a scoping study on the potential applications of PDL in the project partners’ countries and several third countries were realized. Lignite drying and PDL combustion tests were realized in appropriate experimental facilities, including a large-scale hard coal-fired boiler for which a new PDL feeding system was designed and implemented. Drying tests focused on the investigation of mill drying technologies, the transferability of the rotary drum dryer concept to PDL production and novel, fluidized bed drying systems using low-grade heat. Combustion tests focused on the plant ignition with PDL, low-load operation of plants and co-firing of PDL with hard coal. Several modelling activities (static and dynamic thermal cycle calculations, CFD and 1D models, etc.) were performed for selected reference lignite and hard coal fired plants. The aim was to investigate the impact of PDL production technologies on the thermal cycle of lignite-fired plants as well as to evaluate the impact PDL co-firing in lignite and hard coal plants. The integration of such components in the selected plant infrastructure was also assessed. Moreover, the preliminary design of a greenfield lignite-fired power plant with the capacity of high shares of PDL production and co-firing was also assessed. Finally, a detailed technical and economic assessment, based on the previous project results, for the most mature retrofitting concepts for pre-dried lignite production and utilization was performed. The economic assessment in particular resulted in reliable PDL production costs for three countries (Greece, Poland and Romania), which were assessed for different use cases. A final project Guidebook for pre-dried lignite utilization was also created.
