Tactical urbanism in Grand Paris Sud : peer-learning visit report

The Living Spaces peer-learning visit to Grand Paris Sud, held on 5-7 June 2024, focused on the implementation and outcomes of tactical urbanism interventions in the cities of Évry-Courcouronnes and Sénart (France), two new towns located in the south of Paris and created from scratch in the mid-1960s. These interventions are part of a broader strategy known as "Transitory Urbanism," aimed at reimagining urban spaces, enhancing community engagement, and driving long-term urban transformation with short-term experimentations with low and cost-effective budgets. The visit gathered participants from various European cities and regions to exchange knowledge, address challenges, and explore how these approaches could be replicated in different local contexts. The tactical interventions align with a broader urban redevelopment masterplan for Évry-Courcouronnes, which aims to "flatten" the three-dimensional urban design and enhance the city centre’s appeal. This strategy includes redirecting pedestrian flows and revitalising key public spaces to make the area more inviting and accessible. The visit underscored the importance of integrating tactical urbanism within long-term planning frameworks to ensure that temporary interventions lead to permanent, sustainable improvements in the urban environment.
