Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics competences are both drivers for society’s progress and the key for helping people to adapt to emerging economic and social challenges. Focusing on improving the acquisition of science, technology, engineering and mathematical competences and making careers in these areas more attractive is at the heart of the framework for the key competences. Competence in Science, technology, engineering and mathematics is one of the eight key competences as defined in the Council Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning. Erasmus+ is the European Union programme for education, training, youth and sport in Europe for the (2014 – 2020) period. Over this period, the programme will provide opportunities for over 4 million of Europeans to study, train, gain experience and volunteer abroad. Thanks to its lifelong learning approach, Erasmus+ brings these opportunities to all – students, learners, staff, trainees, teachers, volunteers and many more. In addition, education, training, youth and sport organisations participating in Erasmus+ engage in a number of development and networking activities. These include the strategic improvement of the professional skills of their staff, organisational capacity building and creating transnational cooperative partnerships with organisations from other countries in order to produce innovative outputs or exchange best practices. Erasmus+ is one of the European Union flagship programmes and has proved to be highly beneficial to the participants, not only in terms of supporting the transition to employment but also by creating a feeling of belonging to the same European community and promoting sharing common values. The Erasmus+ programme contributes to the creation of a European Education Area where learning, studying and undertaking research should not be hampered by borders and where, in addition to one’s mother tongue, speaking two other languages should become the norm. These initiatives reflect the European Commission’s ambition to enable all young people to receive the best education and training, and find jobs across the continent.
