This project has combined a series of plant trials and data collection techniques with thermomechanical and thermochemical models in order to get improvements of the ladle refractory linings in the conditions of the industrial partners. Data collections included refractory samples, process data of ladles, thermal data, a pyrometer installation, wear data of used refractories and material data. Those data and their SFEG analysis were the basis for model development. Thermodynamic calculations were performed to characterise the thermochemical scenario of the material transformation and simulate its evolution as an effect of different process conditions. On the basis of material investigation results and thermodynamic calculations, a model of thermochemical interaction between the oxide system of the refractory and molten steel and slag was developed. The results, in terms of chemically affected area and compositions, fit well with samples and wear rates, and it is useful to make refractory material recommendations. FEM simulations were carried out for different ladles and configurations to assess the thermomechanical behaviour of lining configurations. Temperature and stress profiles were computed with different models and boundary conditions, for one and for 10 cycles. Variations concerning ladle layout, refractory material, refractory geometry and process conditions were evaluated to recommend optimum products and processes. A soft sensor was developed in one of the factories to offer a new advisory tool to ladle managers that considers the thermal history of the ladle at different positions, pyrometer measurements and a wear model. The combinations of models and data helped industrial partners improve ladle lining results and this improvement was measured.
