HomeMapping of the discussion concerning standards and protocols for communication exchange in the electromobility ecosystem

The necessity to create certainty in the electric-vehicle recharging market is of paramount importance. In addition to electric vehicle uptake and infrastructure roll-out, the development and adoption of standards and protocols for information exchange constitutes a defining element for the electromobility ecosystem to work effectively. In this respect, there is a need to find the correct balance between standardisation processes and innovation. The reasons for a certain and innovative recharging ecosystem are manifold. On the one side, users need services that meet their needs, enjoying a high-quality recharging experience coupled with the highest level of security. Only an open, interoperable and digitally-connected recharging infrastructure can contribute to addressing existing challenges, creating the necessary incentives for users to transfer their choice to e-mobility at the earliest possible time. On the other hand, electromobility stakeholders need certainty to carry out sustainable and effective investments, either for those that have already invested in technology and implementation or those that are seeking to invest and develop new business cases. In consequence, user choice and industry certainty are essential factors to the successful transition towards zero-emission mobility and a carbon-neutral economy in Europe. In this scenario, one of the biggest challenges is to determine what communication standards and relevant features are required to ensure the functioning and roll-out of electromobility systems and services, while not penalising early movers. Undoubtedly, there is a need to move quickly in determining communication standards and protocols features to the benefit of the user and to create certainty for the industry, however, it is also important to note that certain standards and protocols are still under development or undergoing bug-fixing. Whilst standardisation activities reach their completion, the industry faces a challenge against the clock to jointly agree on an approach that ensures an interoperable exchange of information across the electric vehicle recharging ecosystem. This goes beyond determining what specific standards and protocols should be used to this end. At stake is the conception of a future electromobility market, which is open to all stakeholders, with more possible competition, lower costs, and more innovative systems that meet user needs.
