The aim of this study is to provide an analysis on the impact of agri-food imports on EU agricultural production and on other parts of the agri-food value chain, including the economic, social and environmental implications. The specific objectives of the study are: (i) to understand the opportunities and risks that changes in agri-food imports pose to the EU agri-food sector, as well as their underlying drivers, and (ii) to identify aspects in trade agreements and agri-trade policies that allow producers to take advantage of – or provide safeguards against – increased market openness. The study is guided by three themes covering 13 study questions. The 13 study questions are answered through: (i) a descriptive part, and (ii) an analytical part, complemented by (iii) five specific product case studies (beef, sugar, cocoa, honey, soya bean). Various tools (e.g. statistical analysis, literature review, modelling, interviews) are utilised to provide the quantitative and qualitative information required to answer the study questions.
