HomeTemporal and geographical coverage of available data for assessing the impacts of climate change on European agriculture
A thematic report to support an ex-ante impact assessment of the EU adaptation strategy

The purpose of this report is to identify good sources of information and quantitative data regarding climate change impacts on the European Union’s (EU) agricultural sector that can inform the development and implementation of policy and practice to promote climate resilience. The report provides an overview in relation to four focal areas: crop suitability, crop production, economic value and agricultural practices. Sources regarding “crop suitability” were investigated directly and by reference to four of its elements – “bioclimatic zones”, “soil characteristics”, “landscape characteristics”, and “natural vegetation”. The information and quantitative data identified may be used to: - Monitor changes in agricultural systems (e.g. types of crops grown, practices, area irrigated) resulting from the impacts of slow-onset climate change and associated extreme events (e.g. droughts, floods, heatwaves) - Assess the agricultural sector’s climate vulnerabilities, and - Foresee, project and model climate change risks and losses associated with the EU’s agricultural systems. Availability of information, its temporal and geographical coverage, and key knowledge gaps identified are summarised below. In this report, “data” specifically refers to quantitative data, while “sources of information” include databases/datasets, maps, journal articles, reports and tools.
