The use of COVID-19 related state aid measures by EU Member States

From the start, the Commission has worked in tandem with Member States by adopting a Temporary Framework to enable Member States to use the full flexibility under State aid rules to provide much needed support to the economy. This enabled all the 27 Member States to implement large State aid responses. Based on the available State aid data, it seems that the fears of damage to the level playing field – in particular that the wealthier Member States would have out-spent the other Member States – have not materialised so far.
