The European Environment Agency and its Topic Centre on Inland Waters is undertaking an assessment of the sustainable use of water in Europe. This report describes the third part oftha t assessment and considers the importance and impact of extreme hydrological events, in particular floods and droughts, in relation to Europe's water resources. The first assessment dealt with water use by major sectors and the second analysed the benefits of moving from managing water supply t o managing demand for water.
