Overview report on the protection of the welfare of laying hens at all stages of production

The welfare for laying hens is an important area for the EU, where hens must have a nest, perching space, litter to allow pecking and scratching and unrestricted access to a feed trough. This 2021 report assesses the official controls by Member States on the protection of the welfare of laying hens . This report confirms that the system works, describes the trend towards non-cage systems but also identifies areas of non-compliance, challenges and areas for improvements.
