Lessons learnt from Ratcliffe-on-Soar, UK : case study

Ratcliffe-on-Soar Coal Power Station made history as the last coal-fired power station in the UK to close and be taken off the grid in September 2024. What is more, the closure process has been recognised as a success by workers, decision-makers and the energy company Uniper alike. Thanks to close cooperation between the workforce and the company, a smooth transition plan had been put in place, including options for workers such as training, relocation to other power stations or redundancy packages, as well as plans for redeployment. The closure of Ratcliffe-on-Soar provides valuable insights into the enablers and barriers, and can serve as inspiration for other EU coal+ regions in transition with similar conditions.
