The project objective is the optimisation of EAF scrap management, aiming at improvements of the process performance. It shall be achieved through coupled and parallel optimisation of charge materials (scrap and other additions) and operating practices, involving multi-criteria targets as yield, production costs and steel quality. The approach also covers a continuous process monitoring and characterisation on the basis of multi-criteria performance indicators to balance contradictory process targets. The scrap management itself will include material characterisation based on a hyperspectral scrap monitoring system, improved modelling of steel/ slag interaction, charging procedures and scrap mix optimisation, considering also scrap yard material availability. Such ambitious objective was achieved through the following steps: Enhancement of process models and optimization tools; Development and installation of sensors; Definition of performance indicators and implementation of monitoring systems; Process characterization using the KPIs ; Definition of strategies for charge and process management and industrial tests.
