HomeKinetic theory and calculations in a few-energy-group two-space-point model for a fast reactor periodically pulsed by reactivity variations

A simple multigroup two-space-point kinetic theory has been developed in order to obtain accurately the characteristics of stationary pulses of a periodically pulsed fast reactor which contains water-scatterers in the reflector. The energy division aims at separating slow neutrons with lifetimes comparable to the pulse width (~50 /usec) from fast neutrons. In addition to this, the space division is required to obtain especially the pulse characteristics of the thermal flux in the water-scatterer. A comparison of the numerical results obtained from this two-space-point model with those of the previously used one-point model shows that it is necessary to treat the core and scatterer separately, even for analysing the pulse characteristics in the core. In addition, the calculation shows that an insulation of the core from intermediate as well as thermal neutrons produced in the scatterer is required, in order to obtain a high pulse amplitude in the fast group of the core and in the thermal group of the scatterer.
