The EU is working to ensure that people throughout Europe have the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to make good financial decisions. Every day, thousands of EU citizens are deciding where to open a bank account, which mortgage to choose, where to invest their money and how to save for retirement. Financial literacy helps individuals to make such decisions because it helps them to better manage their money, invest in capital markets in a way that meets their needs, and plan for the future. It also helps protecting individuals from over-indebtedness, excessive risk-taking, fraud, or cyber risks. 1 Financial literacy is defined as a combination of awareness, knowledge, skill, attitude and behaviour necessary to make sound financial decisions and ultimately achieve individual financial wellbeing.
