DH (Dillinger Hütte), one of the biggest heavy plate producers in the world, developed with the partners ILT (Fraunhofer Institut für Lasertechnik) and IRSID an automatic system for recognition and quantification of flatness defects at heavy plates after a water cooling treatment for online optimisation of the cooling process of TMCP (thermo-mechanical control process) plates. Based on a laser distance measurement system, the flatness of the plates is automatically detected and qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated including flatness defect type recognition for plate head, filet and tail area. Several process steps are needed for this purpose : extraction of relevant data from measured raw data, elimination of vertical plate movement and recovery of real plate surface topology. Flatness defects are qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated by a new classification system derived from a 3D (3-dimensional) reference catalogue especially generated for ACC (accelerated cooling) cooled heavy plates by full-scale tests in the rolling mill. Α heuristical online model was developed by the correlation of cooling parameters and the qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated flatness defects. With this heuristical model, a closed process online lοοp for the cooling line to improve plate flatness step by step was designed and successfully tested for one plate geometry and one flatness defect type. Parallel to the heuristical model, a physically based model - including themometallurgical and mechanical components - was developed which is able to perform a numerical analysis of the residual stresses and - as a result of it - of the deformation process. With respect to the closed lοορ application, a corrective strategy module was created to support the step-by-step flatness improvement.
