The study ‘Assessment of Integration of Financing Needs for Nature Conservation in 2021- 2027 EU Funding Programmes’ was launched by the European Commission to contribute to the understanding of how much EU funding is available for nature conservation in the programmes under the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021 to 2027, as well as in the NextGenerationEU budget, as a result of the programming process. By estimating the available EU funding, this study also contributes to the understanding of the scale of the funding gap that needs to be bridged to finance nature conservation measures across the EU to fully meet financing needs. This study also aims to assess how much of the overall financing needs, representing measures that would contribute to the implementation of the Nature Restoration Law (NRL), is likely to be delivered by EU funds. Announced in 2022 under the EU's biodiversity strategy for 2030, the Nature Restoration Law was adopted and entered into force in 2024, setting new obligations for Member States across different areas and aspects of nature restoration to restore at least 20% of the EU's land and sea areas by 2030.
