This report presents a state of the art on the design rules for shallow floor beams and deep composite slabs in accordance with ENV 1993 Eurocode 3 and ENV 1994 Eurocode 4. In this form of construction the steel section is contained within the slab depth to create a floor of minimum depth which utilizes composite action. The steel section is designed to support the loads developed during construction, and to act compositely with the partial concrete encasement to resist subsequent imposed loads and to achieve 60 minutes fire resistance without additional protection. The report covers the design of these shallow floor beams at the ultimate and serviceability limit states. The fire resistance assessments are based on temperatures experienced in fire tests, and use material properties at elevated temperatures obtained from Eurocode 4 Part 1.2. The steel decking is also designed to support the loads developed during construction, and later to act compositely with the in-situ concrete in the form of a composite slab. Load tests on deep decking and composite slabs using this type of decking are reviewed. Other constructional features are also addressed. This report reviews the full-scale tests that were carried out in the course of this research. Four 7.5 m shallow floor beam tests were performed in the UK, and two major fire tests were carried out at TNO, Netherlands. These fire tests used both HE steel sections and RHS (hollow) sections and achieved over 60 minutes fire resistance. The composite slab achieved over 120 minutes fire resistance. Based on this information, design tables are presented for HE and UC steel sections with different span and load configurations. Input and output information is given for a specially developed computer program that analyses shallow floor beams to Eurocodes 3 and 4.
