This “Study analysing the possible application of ‘common charger’ requirements to radio equipment not covered by the Directive” was carried out within the context of the ‘common charger’ initiative. The purpose of this study is to support the European Commission in assessing whether the rules introduced by Directive (EU) 2022/2380 could be extended (in whole or in part) to additional categories of portable radio equipment. Through an analysis of market data, interviews with stakeholders, a survey of European consumers, and a modelling exercise, this impact assessment investigated the impact of three different policy options on six categories of portable electronic devices. These categories included AR/VR headsets, wearables (excluding earwear), videogame controllers, widely-commercially available drones, radio-controlled toys, and smart electric toothbrushes. Results on potential environmental, economic, and social impacts are presented for all three policy options for each category of portable electronic devices. Based on this, the study arrived at different conclusions on potential impacts depending on the types of portable electronic devices and of policy options considered.
