The present study was carried out to provide the Commission with a comprehensive, evidence-based analysis of the context, challenges, opportunities, and trends in algorithmic management (AM) in the workplace, as well as potential gaps regarding the relevance and effectiveness of the existing legal and policy responses to it. The temporal scope of the project is until the end of September 2023. The specific objectives of the study are to: - Provide an overview of the concepts and typologies involved in algorithmic management. These are discussed in Chapter 1. Algorithmic management and the world of work, section Concepts and typologies of algorithmic management of the study. Carry out an extensive quantitative overview and analysis of the extent to which AM tools are used in the EU. This is discussed in Chapter 1. Algorithmic management and the world of work, section 1.2. 1.2. Prevalence of AM in the EU. • Prepare an extensive analysis of the challenges and opportunities presented by AM tools for workers and employers. These are discussed in Chapter 2. Opportunities and challenges. Provide an overview and analysis of the relevant EU acquis, national legislation and social partner agreements. These are covered in Chapter 3. Legal and policy framework. Identify likely future scenarios for the evolution of algorithmic management, including how such evolution might affect the responses to AM of workers, employers, and public policies. These are described in Chapter 4. Future Trends. Prepare conclusions, underpinned by results of the above analysis. These are provided in the report’s Conclusions.
