The project, supported by research centers (CSM, BFI), industrial partners (SIDENOR, GMH, ORI Martin) and a supplier of electromagnetic stirring devices (ABB AB) was aimed at: developing a numerical simulation tool for the EAF process, coupling fluid flow, magneto-hydrodynamics effects, energy and mass transfer as well as selected thermodynamic calculations; using this tool for elaboration of process measures with respect to energy issues and improved metallic yield. The work consisted of: modelling (CFD numerical and physical tools); design of stirring sources (plugs, lances, Electromagnetic Stirring, EMS); plant tests. The physical scenario was the EAF flat bath condition and the process outcome was the identification of: the ‘weight’ of each stirring source; the best conditions for combined sources availability to have melt homogenization as quick as possible. The integrated tool provides for a physical representation with reasonable simplifications not affecting the main process issues and quantities related to productivity and quality aspects (e.g. energy released to the bath, melt homogenization occurrence, mixing time vs. stirring source(s) managing). As refers to the tool use to stakeholders’ decision support, the information process/layout performance gave a contribution driving to improved process/layout configurations. For example, the recommendation to install an additional burner was already realized in the GMH plant with good success and in ORI, the indications on the margin of improvement of mixing times and general flow filed when using EMS and combinations of stirring sources helped to be aware of possible quantitative benefits on yield and metallurgical operations.
