Fatigue investigation of higher strength structural steels in notched and in welded condition

This investigation was aimed at a study of the fatigue behaviour of two higher strength structural steels, steel Fe E 355 and a stee! similar to Fe E 460. In a basic program centrally notched specimens from plates of 12 mm thickness and three types of fillet welded joints of 12 x 60 mm test section have been investigated in constant amplitude S-N-tests under alternating, zero-tension, and fluctuating tension loading. Non load carrying fillet welds at transverse stiffeners having a smooth, dressed weld profile when in flat position, or having a less favourable profile when welded in vertical position and a cruciform type of joint with load carrying fillets have been considered. In an additional program larger sections of 20 x 200 mm with similar welds or with butt joints were tested for comparison. For the basic program three welding institutes fabricated the specimens by following the same specification and a complete statistical design was applied for distributing the plate material and for the repartition of the test series to six laboratories. The obtained results are presented in detail by S-N-diagrams and in tables. The fatigue strength of notched specimens was higher for the Fe E 460 steel than for the Fe E 355 steel. The welded specimens from both materials gave identical results with the only exception that a higher maximum stress is allowable for the Fe E 460 steel joints. The less favourable profile of the non load carrying fillets decreased the fatigue strength to 0.7 times that of the smooth fillets. In the cruciform type of joint the fatigue fracture started from the root of the fillets under stresses approximately 0.5 times that of the smooth fillets with crack start at the weld toe. From the comparable tests on the large sections rather similar results were obtained; somewhat lower fatigue strength was found from the bigger cruciform joints. The scatter of the individual results was rather the same as expected if the specimens would have been welded in one workshop and tested in one laboratory only. In particular the results from different laboratories compare within a tolerance of ± 6.5% of average fatigue stress amplitude. The specimens from the three welding institutes differ by less than ± 9% of average stress amplitude, depending on the type of joint. These figures point out the high reliability of the results of the common investigation for establishing design rules.
