The purpose of the study was to review and evaluate the consequences of Enlargement for EU Agriculture in order to assist the committee on Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Parliament. The study has examined the effects of enlargement on Agriculture both in existing EU-countries and in those being in the process of acceding to the EU. The effects examined are environmental, ecological, economic and social ones, especially overproduction, legal and technological adaptation, employment and social cohesion, countryside conservation, soil and water protection. The main conclusion is that although prospects are uncertain the economic accession costs for the existing EU Countries can be more or less compensated by the benefits arising from new markets and from social, economic and political stability of the enlarged Europe.
