HomeA mechanistic investigation of laminar flow through an abrupt enlargement and a nozzle and its application to other pipe fittings

This report is concerned with the flow of highly viscous fluids through pipeline restrictions such as contractions, expansions and valves: termed contraction-expansion devices. This work has been stimulated by the need for improved design methods for emergency pressure relief systems associated with polymerisation reactors. A mechanistic approach is taken to understanding the energy loss mechanisms in both contractions and expansions. These mechanisms are used to generate new design equations for contraction-expansion devices. These represent a significant improvement over existing design methods although there is some uncertainty in the range of pipe diameters to which they can be applied.
