This Compendium was produced as part of a study contract led by the Commission of the European Communities — Directorate-General for Science, Research and Development (Ref. No PSS*0310). It contains a comprehensive overview of problematic situations which are commonly discussed in the standard literature on biomedical ethics as analysed by the International Forum for Biophilosophy. The purpose of the study contract was to establish an 'analytical inventory of possible ethical problems linked to modern biomedical research and of the involved leading scientists and research centres in the European Community'. The latter part of the study objective is reported in a separate, complementary volume, the Repertoire which presents information, following a questionnaire, from experts who have professional leading functions relevant to advanced biomedical research confronted with ethical questions. Both volumes should be regarded as a first step towards a reference source potentially helpful to objectify the present concern and discussion about the fast progress of modern biomedical science and technology. The two volumes are therefore conceived as 'living' documents for practical use, which do not pretend to be exhaustive, but which invite all competent European researchers to complete them in due course and to share the information they have. This will make future updates increasingly more effective. The reader of this book will easily discover that most questions and Issues mentioned in this volume are in fact particular appearances or embodiments of deeper questions like « What is really the good society we can aim at now ?», « What is the good personal well-being we should promote in those circumstances ?», « What does it mean to us to make good use of and develop a good attitude towards nature, its potential problems and its resources ?», « What are the good things for us to aspire to now ?», « How exactly can health-care contribute to the realization of those goals ?», and « How exactly can developments in biology or medicine improve the quality of those goals or the effectiveness to reach them ?».
