“I am very proud to be responsible for the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s in-house science and knowledge service. At a time when expert opinion is increasingly being questioned, the JRC’s role as a provider of independent, objective and evidence-based support to policy is more important than ever as a guardian against the rising tide of dis- or misinformation. ”
“2016 was a period of remarkable changes. The JRC developed the JRC Strategy 2030 for how the organisation should evolve over the next 15 years with the aim of better serving the political priorities of the European Commission (EC). The Board is very satisfied with the ambition, scope, completeness and direction of this Strategy. ”
“The JRC sits at the intersection section- of science and policy. Both of these worlds are changing fast. Policy challenges are becoming more complex and science is being transformed by new technologies and big data. Moreover, as the world becomes more complex, hard evidence is required by an increasing number of policies. So, the JRC has to use its resources in a smarter way. It must become more flexible, focused and responsive. Its new Strategy 2030 tackles these challenges head-on, marking a significant shiſt in the organisation’s activities. ”
“The JRC is setting up knowledge and competence centres as platforms to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaborative working in all EU policy areas. It operates knowledge centres in key policy areas and competence centres on methodological skills. The JRC’s new EU Policy Lab explores new approaches to policymaking. ”
“The JRC promoted direct engagement with its partners, stakeholders and the wider public through numerous events and outreach activities. The following examples highlight those with a specific forward-looking dimension. ”
“The JRC Annual Conference 2016 focused on the importance of human capital for the prosperity of regions and cities. It took place on 11 October during the European Week of Regions and Cities at the Bozar venue in Brussels. The event gathered over 200 participants who discussed how science in general and JRC contributions in
particular can help foster regional and urban growth by providing robust evidence in support of the development of relevant
territorial policies. ”
“As of 31 December 2016, women were represented in 24.3 % administrator (AD) posts at the JRC, compared to the Commission’s average of 44.5 %. The JRC will continue its efforts in line with the Commission’s objective to make the management ranks more reflective of gender diversity. ”
