n-Butyl acetate, sec-butyl acetate and isobutyl acetate have structural similarities and a common metabolic pathway. The main critical effect is local irritation, which is common to all three acetates. These common toxicological properties justify a recommendation of an OEL for all three butyl acetate isomers. The critical effect of n-butyl acetate inhalation is irritation of the eyes, nose and throat. n-Butyl acetate is readily metabolised to n-butanol and acetic acid, the latter of which might also contribute to its irritating potential. For sec-butyl acetate, hardly any data on human exposure were available and also very few animal data, but it can be assumed that it is well absorbed after inhalation and oral exposure, and is hydrolysed by unspecific esterases to acetic acid and sec-butanol, which is further metabolised to ethyl methyl ketone. Also for isobutyl acetate, the critical effect appears to be irritation, although data on human exposure as well as animal data are limited.
