In December 2022, representatives from governments and international organisations gathered at the Convention on Biological Diversity COP 15 in Montreal to negotiate the agreement, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, aimed at protecting, restoring and using sustainably nature. Recent scientific studies underscore the urgent need for such a global action, revealing that, despite some efforts and progress, biodiversity is declining at a rate unprecedented in human history. The Framework specifically refers to the work of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), which presents the scientific consensus in its authoritative reports about biodiversity status and associated challenges and is extensively supported by the EU.
