The aim of the LPROLLCOAT project was to improve the life of work rolls during hot rolling of long products by novel applications of available wear resistant coatings as well as development of a new generation of coatings. To that end, up to five different coating application techniques were evaluated: laser cladding, HVOF, CGDSP, chemical dispersion and the CFUMSIP. Laboratory trials showed that HVOF and CGDSP coating applications were not suitable for hot rolling application. The other processes achieved better results and industrial trials were prepared. For laser cladding, two powder compositions were selected: an H13 powder composition for PFC-rolls and a NiCrBSi+60%WC coating for bar rolls. The industrial campaign for the rolling of bars showed an increase in wear resistance and improved surface quality with an increased campaign length of 60%. For the chemical coatings an electroless NBc-coating composition was selected and applied on baffle plate rings (bottom roll). Industrial trials showed that at least an increase of 60% campaign length was obtained with the coated work roll. Additionally Chrome plating was used on crane rails where, mainly due to reduced sticking gains, up to 3.24€/ton were obtained. For the PVD coatings, a new improved CrAlN in combination with high power medium frequency pulsed plasma nitriding was developed. Rod disks were coated and industrially tested, but despite positive laboratory results on the hot rolling pilot mill, this coating didn’t resist the high industrial rod rolling conditions. Within this project very positive results were obtained for laser cladding and electroless dispersion coatings. Nevertheless further research will be required before this could be fully implemented as a standard at industrial level. Besides the coating applications, a new generation of work roll material for large sheet piles rolls was evaluated with average gains of 1.5M€/year.
