Buckling and strip tracking are common problems in continuous processing lines with annealing furnace and are sources of product downgrading and loss of productivity. This phenomenon is more likely to occur on thin and wide material and consequences are more disastrous with such material. Main objectives of this project are: Developing a sensor able to measure strip flatness across width inside the annealing furnace; Developing means for measuring the strip temperature across strip width; Realising the coupling of both measurements at same location in industrial situation; Using data given by those measurements, it is foreseen to analyse the effect of current line production parameters (Strip speed, strip format, heating and cooling patterns…) on the occurrence of buckling or strip deformations during process; Modelling the heating/cooling process with FE to be able to visualise and eliminate problems. After having developed sensors at the lab as well as on pilot lines, trials with industrial layout have been made. Temperature and strip flatness sensors were concerned. Industrial localisations have been selected and sensors installed. After facing lots of industrial running problems, all sensors have been used in industrial situation with good results. Detailed operational results are described in this report. Despite the short time available for gathering industrial data, guidelines for better processing seems to emerge from the sensor use (several industrial partners already interested in such device). On another hand, data for simulation software were collected and confirmed simulation results.
