This pilot project analyses the potential advantages of farmers being members of producer organisations (Pos). It examines how Pos may strengthen producers’ position in the agri-food supply chain and thereby improve the overall socioeconomic and environmental sustainability of farms. Moreover, the project examines how Pos can boost the overall sustainability of their members by establishing sectoral interventions through operational programmes (Ops). The analysis shows that the most relevant effect of farmers’ cooperation is in soft factors such as the improvement of marketing procedures, access to market, stability and security. Therefore, Pos need to be seen as complementary to other determinants of a farm’s economic viability (e.g. farm size, farmers’ education). The value added to socioeconomic and environmental sustainability through farmers’ cooperation is highly dependent on country and sector, likely by virtue of the different structural features, type of product and general economic context. The report examines good practices for Pos in conceiving and building Ops in the fruit and vegetables (F&V) sector. Finally, it includes 16 case studies on Pos operating in the livestock and protein crops sectors to show how establishing sectoral interventions through Ops may help Pos to increase members’ sustainability. The results of the analysis on the opportunities offered by OP are summarised in a Handbook that is translated in all EU official languages to ensure broad dissemination.
