Muon Tomography (MT) is a relatively new technique developed to produce 3D images of the material density distribution inside large and dense volumes, using the penetration power of cosmic ray muons. The aim of the present project was to explore the capacity of using this technique to image the material composition inside a Blast Furnace (BF), which can be useful to optimize the BF operation. It is organized along two different but complementary research lines. The first line investigates the nature and quality of information achievable from measuring with MT materials usually present in blast furnaces. To this purpose, samples were procured both from laboratory and from the Experimental Blast Furnace in Luleå (Sweden) and were then analyzed both with conventional methods and with MT. The two types of measurements were finally compared. The goal of the second line was to assess, analyzing simulated data, the capability of using MT to produce 3D images of the different components present in the BF burden (burden materials, hot metal, etc.) during BF operation. To this purpose, a software framework was developed to simulate the cosmic muon flux interactions with the materials of the experimental setup implemented in the code, describing both a BF model and the muon detectors. A software package capable to produce tomographic images starting from muon scattering data was also developed, and applied to simulated data obtained using different BF models. The images were finally analyzed to verify their usefulness as a tool to optimize the BF operation.
