Since the very first, in 1999, the Marie Curie Scientific Workshops have evolved greatly. Originally co-organised by the Commission and a local host to help monitor the progress in research of a few Marie Curie fellows working in a specific geographical area, they have developed to the present one in San Sebastian-Donostia with participation of 225 fellows who are at present carrying out Marie Curie projects all over an enlarged Europe (including the Associated States and Associated Candidate Countries). Together, Mondragon University and the Commission have organised an ambitious multidisciplinary programme of presentations, discussion groups and technical site visits on the theme: Developing a scientific career. The specific reasons for organising this workshop have been to provide the Marie Curie fellows with opportunities to: - Present their research to a non-specialist audience; - Meet scientists from disciplines other than their own; - Learn of career possibilities in different disciplines and sectors such as academia, industry and business enterprise; - Receive information about so-called alternative professional careers in science such as scientific, editorial journalism; - Make site visits, with opportunities to visit industrial and applied science environments, including also multidisciplinary ones; - Discuss together the theme of the workshop Developing a scientific career. This, the last workshop of the Fifth Framework Programme, also afforded the Commission the possibility of directly informing the fellows present of unprecedented opportunities for developing a scientific career through EU funding in the Sixth Framework Programme. It is my privilege to recommend, without hesitation, these proceedings to you for your own personal reading. It provides not only a glimpse of the new, fascinating research being carried out by the current generation of Marie Curie fellows, but also captures some of the exciting aspects of developing a scientific career in the European Research Area (ERA).
