A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, providing a new way of doing something or a new technical solution to a problem. This provides the exclusive right to prevent or stop others from commercially exploiting the patented invention. In order for an invention to be patentable, it must be novel (not known in the state of the art), involve an inventive step (non-obvious to a person skilled in the invention’s technical field) and capable of industrial application. Scientific theories, aesthetic creations, mathematical methods, plant or animal varieties, discoveries of natural substances, commercial methods, methods for medical treatment, or computer programs are generally not patentable.
