Desulphurisation of liquid steel with refining top slags

Lime-saturated top slags, intensive ladle stirring and low oxygen potentials are prerequisites for the desulphurisation of liquid steel to low residual levels. Although practical information is quite comprehensive, no attempt has been made until now to optimise the process in respect of slag control and refining kinetics. It is the objective of this multi-partner project to investigate the influencing parameters of the desulphurisation reaction in detail, to quantify the reaction kinetics and to develop new methods of desulphurisation treatment. The present investigation is divided into the following parts : plant trials ; laboratory experiments ; modelling of the desulphurisation process. Steel and slag sampling from industrial trials taken at short time-intervals has served to observe the course of the desulphurisation process. Additionally, a special trial has been performed to derive large steel samples in order to quantify the emulsification effect by metallographic inspection. Detailed information about the slag capacity has been obtained by varying the slag composition and temperature in equilibrium experiments. Furthermore, the fluid flow and emulsification effects have been investigated in water model trials. For determining the course of steel desulphurisation during secondary metallurgy, plant trials have been carried out under various operational conditions. The results obtained from the trials show that the following measures are favourable for the removal of sulphur: - adjustment of ladle slag amount and composition ; - use of lime-saturated ladle slags for desulphurisation; - intensive bath stirring ; - control of the slag amount and the aluminium content of liquid steel during ladle treatment. The results of the model calculations are in good agreement with the courses of components measured during the desulphurisation process. Practical experience is confirmed by the model results.
