Sustainable agriculture using blast furnace and steel slags as liming agents

The aim of this research work has been to investigate the effects of long-term fertilisation, using iron and steel slag as a fertiliser as well as a liming agent, on harvest yield, plant quality and soil conditions. Different test plots on arable land, pasture and forest have been chosen to generalise the results obtained. Special attention has been given to elements chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) which are contained in steel slag in high amounts. The origin of these elements and their input into the metallurgical cycle has been studied by balancing all materials entering the iron and steelmaking facilities. The main origin is the iron ores themselves. Finally, it can be stressed that the use of iron and steel slags always results in significantly higher yields compared with the use of other liming agents and compared with plots not using liming agents. There is no risk, resulting from Cr and V, to the plants and food produced. Chromium and vanadium are rather immobile in the soil. It has been shown that these elements are enriched in the first 30 cm from the surface, which is the ploughed area and the growing zone of the plants’ roots. There is no migration of chromium and vanadium into deeper zones of the soil, so that exposure to ground water can be excluded. As a conclusion, it seems to be necessary to continue the research with the aim of investigating the effects of iron and steel slags on the soil activity, soil bacterial activity and the effects of the SiO2 in these slags on plants’ stability and health.
