This work has two objectives:
— To provide plain English summaries of the regional geology of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, based upon published Regional Guides; and
— To develop a robust approach to geological uncertainty during the Managing Radioactive Waste Safely process and the 3D geological modelling during the proposed 'Learning' phase in particular.
The scope of the work is as follows:
a) to develop thirteen Regional Geological Summaries covering England, Wales and Northern Ireland including appropriate graphical support material;
b) to develop a paper describing how uncertainty will be reduced during the Geological Disposal Facility siting process, from the start of a proposed 'learning' phase, right through to the point at which construction starts, and beyond (though the emphasis will be on the earlier parts of the programme). The paper will also describe how gaps in the data and understanding will be filled at each stage to allow key decisions to be made as the programme proceeds.
c) to develop an outline methodology for:
— how, in the geological report that the BGS will be producing for any community that enters a 'Learning' phase, the uncertainty attached to any geological features that are described, will be represented; and
— how the understanding based upon available data will be extrapolated to address that uncertainty sufficiently to inform a judgement on 'reasonable prospects' for siting a geological disposal facility.
