In a context of growing evidence concerning the adverse environmental effects of mercury contained in dental amalgam and button cell batteries on the one hand, and recent policy developments within Member States and at the international levels on these topics on the other hand, this study aims to provide the Commission with an evidence base in order to inform future EU policy actions. Specific objectives are as follows: Establish the current situation with regards to the quantities of mercury used in dental amalgam and batteries in the EU and examine the environmental impacts of these products over their life cycle ; propose and compare relevant policy options in order to reduce the environmental impact of these products and promote the use of Hg-free alternatives, with the objective to minimise and, where feasible, eliminate mercury use, on the basis of their respective economic, social, and environmental impacts.
