The study aims to evaluate the EU school scheme for the supply of fruit and vegetables, and milk in educational establishments set out in Regulation (EU) No°1308/2013 and entered into force on 1 August 2017. The analysis covers four school years (2017/2018 to 2020/2021) and is based on secondary data and primary data collected through a family survey, a survey of scheme managing authorities and case study interviews. The geographical scope is EU-27 and UK until 2020. Results show that the school scheme is relevant in relation to its main objectives of “increasing children's consumption of selected agricultural products” and “improving children's eating habits”. The Covid-19 pandemic significantly influenced the scheme implementation from March 2020: the increase of children participation in the fruits and vegetables part of the scheme recorded in the first 2 years was interrupted by the pandemic, whereas the milk part saw a gradual participation decline starting before the pandemic. Overall, the share of children receiving both fruits and vegetables and milk/milk products has increased compared to the previous period and a larger variety of products are distributed, indicating that more children benefit from a more varied supply of products.
