HomeBehavioural study on origin claims on fishery and aquaculture products

This study has been carried out to help the European Commission services (DG MARE) getting a broader understanding of the values that consumers attach to the concept of origin, their level of comprehension, the risks of misunderstanding with the current regulatory regime, and the consumers’ preferences when it comes to the type of origin-related information attached to Fishery and Aquaculture Products (FAPs). The study’s objectives were to: Shed light on what values EU consumers associate with origin and why; assess what kind of origin-related information would provide them with the knowledge that they need/expect to make informed purchasing choices, and determine whether some of the currently available information could be eliminated/modified because it is not actually relevant to consumers, it is ambiguous or it is misleading. Assess whether the voluntary information that operators provide to consumers meets their needs. Analyse the extent to which the information provided for in Article 38 of Regulation (EU) No 1379/2013 on the common organisation of the markets in fishery and aquaculture products is understandable for the consumer and what meanings it conveys.
