RECaL project has validated a new sorbent regeneration technique for postcombustion Calcium Looping CO2 capture systems, that can reduce the net sorbent requirements and further reduce operating cost and energy penalties of the overall process. The novel method is based on the re-carbonation of carbonated particles with pure CO2, and the use of solids purges from the capture process for flue gas desulfurization. The validation of the feasibility of these two processes in pilot scale is the core results of RECaL project which has been supported with modelling, lab experiments and a final techno-economical feasibility study to analyse the real potential of this new regeneration technique. Tests conducted under the most stable set of conditions achieved in RECAL project have shown that increments of the CO2 carrying capacity up to 10 net % points are possible under reasonable and scalable recarbonation conditions. This indicates that CaL looping systems, with the incorporation of this simple reactivation step, could be work with minimum make-up flows of limestone, which would enhance their competitive advantages. The techno-economical analysis developed in the project shows that is possible to reach a reduction on the CO2 capture cost of 14% using this reactivation procedure.
