Description

The purpose of the RFI is to enhance Network Rail’s existing tamping machines. Tampers are used for compacting ballast underneath the sleepers to produce stable sleeper beds and maintain the ideal track geometry, ensuring the safety and durability of the track. The project is looking for a supplier to develop and install a solution that utilises new technology to improve the functionality of an existing tamper. Network Rail is expecting the fitment of new equipment to allow: tamping time and pressure to be adjusted automatically depending on ground conditions; greater control of tamping operations; real time reporting on tamping activity and ground/ballast condition and improved machine reliability.
Through these advancements Network Rail is expecting to benefit from: improve ballast life; improved track bed stability; the ability to produce a more efficient production plan; improved safety and reduced noise levels.
