The British Library intends to vacate its Newspaper Library in Colindale, London by September 2014 and to relocate the historic newspaper, periodical and microfilm collections to sites at Boston Spa, and St Pancras, London. To enable this, a new high density, automated newspaper storage building (NSB) is currently being constructed at Boston Spa, Yorkshire.
This contract is for the provision of services relating to the relocation of c25 kilometres of historic newspaper collections to the British Library’s two remaining sites at London and Boston Spa. Material will transfer to a new high density, Newspaper Storage Building at Boston Spa, Yorkshire, to the existing Additional Storage Building at Boston Spa, Yorkshire and to the main British Library site at St Pancras, London.
The relocation also includes a final move of newspaper collections, within and between the British Library’s existing Additional Storage Building at Boston Spa to the newly constructed Newspaper Storage Building at Boston Spa.
The project comprises of 5 move processes:
1) Low Use Periodicals from Colindale to the Additional Storage Building (ASB) at Boston Spa;
2) Basement Microfilm to Boston Spa (building tbc);
3) High Use Periodicals, High Value Newspapers, Reference Material and Microfilm from Colindale to St Pancras;
4) Hardcopy Newspapers from Colindale to the Newspaper Storage Building (NSB) at Boston Spa;
5) Internal move at Boston Spa site – Newspapers from ASB to NSB.
The start date for this contract is anticipated to be February 2013 and will be for the duration of approximately 18-20 months – depending on timescales and location readiness.
