Description

The University of the Bundeswehr Munich (UniBw M) was founded in 1973 on the initiative of the then Federal Minister of Defence, Helmut Schmidt, under the name "University of the Bundeswehr Munich". It is one of two universities that the Bundeswehr has to train its trainee officers and young officers. The university is part of the civil organisational division Personnel and is assigned to the Federal Ministry of Defence. On 11 August 2020, UniBw M founded a new "Center for Digitalization and Technology Research of the Bundeswehr" (dtec.bw). dtec.bw is part of the Federal Government's Economic Recovery Plan to overcome the COVID-19 crisis and will be equipped with research funds from the Economic Recovery Plan via the Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg). The SHL project is funded by dtec.bw. dtec.bw is funded by the European Union - NextGenerationEU. The research project "Smart Health Lab (SHL)" aims at innovative cutting-edge research in medical technology, sensor technology, data science as well as basic research on medical and psychological mechanisms and application research on the effectiveness of smart health technologies. The focus is currently on research in the military sector in particular: the digitalisation of the Bundeswehr, training and further education, preparation for deployment and the prevention of mental disorders. The insights gained can be transferred into the civilian context of application and thus promote civil-military cooperation. The previous projects, which were carried out as part of the dtec.bw project, focused on stress during initial medical care operations for wounded soldiers and integrated a patient simulation. Thus, the Serious Games had covered a very focused area in which these Serious Games could clearly show their added value. The UniBw M now intends to develop an immersive, adaptive VR training simulation to prepare soldiers for more general deployment scenarios under stress conditions. The VR training simulation is aimed at military training or research institutions with a focus on stress-adaptive training systems with the target group soldiers of the Bundeswehr. The aim of the VR training simulation is to achieve a realistic preparation for use and the experience of stress in a protected setting by experiencing certain training situations. The goal for the player is to remain undetected and alive for a certain time despite increasing challenges in the game (scalable stressors).
